Braided Polyester Nonabsorbable

Polyester suture is a nonabsorbable, sterile surgical suture composed of polyethylene terepthalate. It is prepared from fibers of high molecular weight, long-chain, linear polyesters having recurrent aromatic rings as an integral component. The braided suture is available uncoated or coated uniformly with silicone to increase surface lubricity, thereby enhancing handling characteristics, ease of passage through tissue, and knot run-down properties.

Characteristics
Polybond exhibits
  • High tensile strength, both linear and knotted, thus giving
  • Maximum security in approximation of tissues under stress conditions;
  • Permanent support (tensile strength is retained indefinitely);
  • Maximum security with prosthetic implants;
  • Smooth flow through tissue while maintaining optimal knot security.
Indications
Polyester suture is indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in cardiovascular, ophthalmic, and neurological procedures.

Actions
Polyester suture elicits a minimal acute inflammatory reaction in tissues, followed by gradual encapsulation of the suture by fibrous connective tissue.

Tensile Strength
Polyester suture is nonabsorbable and no significant change in tensile strength retention is known to occur in vivo.

Sterilization
Ethylene Oxide

Packaging
Polyester suture is a nonabsorbable braided, coated or uncoated, polyester suture. It is available dyed green or with titanium dioxide (white). It is available is USP sizes 8-0 through 5 (metric sizes 0.4-7). The suture is supplied sterile in precut lengths attached to various needle types in one- to three-dozen boxes, or non-needled on ligating reels.
