Braided Natural Silk Nonabsorbable
Silk is a braided nonabsorbable, sterile surgical suture composed of an organic protein called fibroin. This protein is derived from the domesticated species Bombyx mori (B mori) of the family Bombycidae.
Characteristics
Silk suture exhibits
Silk suture is indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in cardiovascular, ophthalmic, and neurological procedures.
Actions
Silk suture elicits a minimal acute inflammatory reaction in tissue, which is followed by gradual encapsulation of the suture by fibrous connective tissue.
Tensile Strength
While Silk suture is not absorbed, progressive degradation of the proteinaceous silk fiber in vivo may result in gradual loss of the suture tensile strength over time.
Sterilization
Ethylene oxide.
Packaging
Silk suture is a nonabsorbable braided or twisted, silicone coated (unless otherwise noted), undyed (white) or dyed black (logwood extract). It is available in (USP) sizes 9-0 through 5 (metric sizes 0.3-7). The suture is supplied sterile in precut lengths attached to various needle types in one- to three-dozen boxes, or non-needled on ligating reels.
Silk suture exhibits
- Smooth flow through tissue while maintaining optimal knot security.
